A rod is a technical component in the form of a shaft, typically cylindrical in shape. It is the main working element of piston, hydraulic, and pneumatic mechanisms. A rod connects the piston with other mechanical components, such as a slider or actuator, and transmits linear force. Rod manufacturing requires the use of high-strength materials, specialized machinery, as well as heat treatment and anti-corrosion processes to ensure resistance to high mechanical loads during operation.
New Standard specializes in the manufacturing of hydraulic cylinder rods, gears, shafts, guides, and other components based on individual drawings and samples provided by the customer.
Rod Classification
Rods can be classified according to their design features, the type of equipment in which they are used, and the material of manufacture. Based on design characteristics, rods may be solid or hollow. Solid rods are mainly used in small hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, while hollow rods are applied in telescopic cylinders or in applications where minimum weight is required.
Depending on the type of equipment, rods can be single-acting, double-acting, or telescopic. Telescopic rod designs consist of hollow sections of different diameters that slide into one another during operation, allowing minimal occupied space while providing maximum stroke length.
The primary materials used for rod manufacturing are various grades of steel:
- Structural steel — the most commonly used grades include 35, 45, 20G2, and 40G2;
- Specialized structural steel — for high mechanical loads and elevated operating temperatures, grades such as 38KhMA, 40KhM, 40Kh2N2MA, and 38KhGM may be used;
- Stainless steel — for equipment operating in aggressive environments, grades such as 08Kh18N10T and 05Kh18N10T are applied;
- Alloy steel — grade 20MnV6 is suitable for most hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder designs.
Based on surface treatment, rods are divided into three groups. The first group includes rods without special surface treatment. The second group consists of rods with heat treatment. The third group includes chrome-plated rods, which are used to minimize friction, reduce wear, and protect the metal from corrosion, dust, and contamination.

At New Standard, rods are manufactured on CNC lathes and turning–milling (turning and centering) machines to achieve high-precision components. Initially, the steel blank is machined on a lathe to obtain the required shape and dimensions, after which it may undergo additional processing stages, such as milling to create mounting features and centering holes for further operations.
The main advantages of New Standard in the Ukrainian market include extensive experience in implementing projects of any technological complexity, a modern fleet of machinery and equipment, the use of certified materials, and quality control at all stages of production.
