What Are Shafts Used For?
A shaft is a technical component of cylindrical or tubular shape, typically manufactured from carbon steel, bearing steel, or alloy steel. The main function of shafts is the transmission of mechanical energy in various technical devices and mechanisms, as well as driving wheels, pulleys, rollers, or drums. A shaft ensures efficient torque transmission and withstands loads applied by other components and supports.
Depending on their shape, shafts can be straight, smooth, stepped, profiled, crank, eccentric, or cardan (drive) shafts. In addition, shafts may be equipped with cylindrical or conical ends.
Equipment Used in Custom Shaft Manufacturing
During the custom shaft manufacturing process, the following production equipment may be used:
- turning machines for external and internal turning, thread cutting, and drilling;
- milling machines for forming profiles and complex surfaces;
- surface, internal, and cylindrical grinding machines for high-precision finishing;
- drilling machines for creating technological holes;
- heat treatment equipment, thread-cutting equipment, and painting equipment.

- communication between the customer’s representatives and the company’s specialists to clarify requirements, volumes, and technical parameters of the order;
- analysis of the provided technical documentation or the customer’s sample, preparation of cost calculations, and agreement on pricing and production timelines with the customer;
- approval of the technical specification with the customer prior to launching production;
- machining of metal in accordance with the approved documentation and technological requirements;
- handover or delivery of the manufactured metal products to the customer in accordance with the agreed terms.
At the shaft manufacturing stage, the blank is machined on CNC equipment to achieve the required shape. If necessary, welding of individual elements and milling of technological grooves and recesses may be performed. The shaft is balanced, its surface is ground, and, at the customer’s request, it can be strengthened by heat treatment (hardening) and painted to protect the metal from corrosion.
The cost of shaft manufacturing depends on various factors, the main ones being design complexity and required production time, the material and overall dimensions of the shaft, the quantity per batch, as well as the availability of additional services. The larger the batch of shafts, the lower the unit cost per product.
